Our Story

Neighbors in Beaverton, Aloha, and West Portland came together at Bilal Masjid in 2022. What started as a conversation became 14 faith communities showing up for each other.

About Westside Interfaith Neighbors

More a movement than an organization — and an opportunity for all involved to shape our future.

Over 50 community members gathered at Bilal Masjid for an interfaith event.

Our story

October 30, 2022: At an Open House at Bilal Masjid many expressed concern about the polarization and violence in our country, and agreed to consider how to respond to this reality.

The Racial Justice & Equity Team at Cedar Hills UCC decided to host a "think-tank" event with representatives from other churches and leaders from Bilal. Those who participated suggested forming a Coalition of Interfaith communities — its purpose to build relationships of mutual understanding, respect and support in order to overcome extremist, separatist ideology dividing our country and inciting violence.

At the "think-tank," 18 very enthusiastic participants identified three paths to build interfaith relationships: educational experiences, social/fun events, and community action.

Jan. 29, 2023

Bilal Masjid hosted an event attended by over 50 people, and participants volunteered to work on one of the three paths.

Spring 2023

The group solicited name suggestions and then did a survey to arrive at the name Westside Interfaith Neighbors (WIN).

Where we are now

We are still in beginning stages, more a movement than an organization, and definitely an opportunity for all involved to shape its future.

WIN's educational events are where neighbors become teachers. A rabbi explains Shabbat. An imam shares the meaning of Ramadan. A Bahá'í community member describes Race Amity Day. A Buddhist priest leads a meditation. Nobody is converting anyone. Everyone is learning.

What we've done together

Warm vests for unhoused neighbors

Members gathered to make warm vests by hand for people without shelter. The materials were simple. The work was shared. The vests went to people who needed them.

Books for Coffee Creek Correctional Facility and Safe Rest Village

Collected at Aloha United Methodist Church. Books for people in prison and people in transitional housing — because everyone deserves something to read.

Oregon Food Bank volunteering

Groups from across the coalition volunteered together. Different traditions, same work.

Rebuilding Together

Hands-on home repair for neighbors who need it.

WIN set up a table at the city's welcoming event — showing up as neighbors in the neighborhood.

What's ahead

The steering committee is always looking for the next way to show up. Service projects come from the community — someone sees a need, brings it to the group, and we figure out how to help together.
